It is all official. Union Urban Minister and close confidante of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, has been chosen as NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate. Since NDA picked Ramnath Kovind (from Uttar Pradesh) as the Presidential candidate, it said to have picked Venkaiah Naidu (from Andhra Pradesh) form South for the coveted job.
“Venkaiah has a lot of experience, all NDA allies have welcomed this decision,” BJP President Amit Shah announced at a press conference in Delhi on Monday evening. AP CM Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana CM KCR have welcomed Venkaiah’s name for the Vice-President post.
Venkaiah said to have agreed the party’s decision. Venkaiah Naidu is going to file his nomination for Vice President Tomorrow at 11 AM. He is expected to tender his resignation for Union Minister post before filing his nomination.
68-year-old Venkaiah, who hails from Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, has been loyal to BJP for several years since he joined the party right after his student politics in ABVP.
Venkaiah Naidu did his bachelor’s degree in politics and diplomatic studies from V. R. College in Nellore. Later, he acquired a bachelor’s degree in law with specialisation in international law from Andhra University College of Law, Visakhapatnam. He was a swayamsevak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and joined ABVP during his college days. He was elected as the president of the students union of colleges affiliated to the Andhra University. He came into spotlight for his prominent role in the Jai Andhra Movement of 1972. While Kakani Venkata Ratnam led the movement from Vijayawada, Naidu took active part in the agitation in Nellore, until it was called off a year later.
Venkaiah subsequently joined BJP and played quite active role. He served as an MLA twice to AP Legislative Assembly (United) twice from Udayagiri Assembly constituency in Nellore district. He was nominated as Rajya Sabha member and even served as Union Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. He worked as the National President of BJP twice.
